Laika

Available to adopt

Laika is a 5-year-old female who was surrendered through no fault of her own when her owner was deployed overseas and couldn’t find long-term care. She’s recently spayed, microchipped, and ready for a stable home that can give her the routine and companionship she’s been missing.

Laika is very much a people dog. In foster, she’s chosen “her person” and happily shadows them from room to room—kitchen trips and bathroom breaks included. She’s friendly and happy-go-lucky, enjoys being brushed, and loves car rides. She gets along with other dogs and is polite with children, but she’d also do very well as the only dog, soaking up all the attention. In her current foster home she coexists fine with resident dogs, even when one is a bit bossy; Laika keeps her cool and avoids conflict.

On leash she’s strong but generally manageable; if she’s being asked to do something she really doesn’t want to do, she may lean into the pull. She’s smart and responsive—comes when called in the yard, understands “in house,” and is usually the first to the door when it’s time to come back inside. She’s also eager to bond and has started checking in for pets and scratches with both people in her foster home.

Laika does have mild separation anxiety that currently shows up as barking when she’s left alone. Her foster leaves her for about an hour each day; she vocalizes at departure and again when she realizes her people are back, but she hasn’t been destructive. Because of the barking, a home without shared walls (or with understanding neighbors) is a better fit, and her new family should be willing to work on gradual alone-time training and a steady routine.

Vet visits are hard for Laika and have been since puppyhood. Needles in particular make her fearful, and she has been muzzled for vaccines or blood draws. At her last appointment, she walked into the clinic lobby but resisted once she realized where she was, and the staff needed to help guide her to the back while she barked. A Fear-Free–minded clinic, advance planning, and continued muzzle conditioning will make these visits safer and less stressful for everyone.

Typical of northern breeds, Laika likes to chase critters and cats, so a cat-free home is recommended and a secure yard is a plus. With patient guidance, consistent expectations, and plenty of time by your side, she’s going to make a devoted companion. If you’re looking for a loyal shadow who will be your best friend, Laika may be your girl.
