Casper

Available to adopt

One of the first things we noticed about Casper’s situation was the degree to which his current family cares for him. Casper crossed their paths via a quick-decision “someone needs to step up for this dog” situation six months ago and they stepped up, helping Casper — who had clearly endured a rough chapter before arriving — get healthy, cleaned up, and situated in their home. They’ve since realized, however, that Casper would better thrive in a home that can give him the dedicated attention and resources he deserves.

Casper is very friendly, enthusiastic and energetic. He loves to go on long walks every day (1.5-2hrs), loves being brushed, loves attention and affection, and loves new dogs and new people. He loves playing in the water (though typical for Samoyeds, he isn’t a swimmer per se) and of course loves snow.

Though notably non-aggressive, as a young dog (18 months) Casper can push boundaries, but with some training and patience (and age), he should be quick to learn how to better pick up on behavioral cues.

Casper’s a fan of vegetables (carrots, peas, squash, spinach), and typically eats a meal of wet and dry food with mixed veggies (and eggs with his breakfast!). His favorite treats are duck jerky and pig ears.

The missing ingredient? Constant companionship, which just isn’t possible due to his current family’s work schedules. This is key because Casper has separation anxiety, which will manifest as barking, whining, and shredding the occasional object (plastic bags are a favorite) to pass the time. He spent most of his time in a crate prior to joining this family, so a crate now only exacerbates the anxiety. Casper also gets quite anxious on car rides.

Though he’s good with cats, he can be overly forward until a warning swipe or two, and though he’s good with kids, he can be a bit wary of them on first meeting.

The ideal home for Casper would be one that can meet his current standards of care in terms of exercise, diet and affection, but also provide an environment where home-alone time will be a very rare thing.

Casper’s current family loves him a lot, and when they approached rescue they described their motivation as “envisioning this perfect life for him” that they just weren’t able to provide. Could that perfect life be with you? If you do adopt Casper, we’ll ask that you share an occasional update with rescue and his current family, showing him doing just that.
